Programs

Children And Youth

Children are among the most vulnerable refugees, but also the most resilient. CCVT offers programs to help children and teenagers, and also their parents.

Homework Club
An after-school program staffed by skilled volunteer tutors who provide one-on-one support with homework assignments.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are for kids in grades 3-8.
Mondays are for high-school students, and include access to our computer lab.

One-on-One Tutoring
A free one-on-one tutoring program for youth in high school, college and university, as well as those looking to practice academic English. CCVT matches students with volunteer tutors according to availability and areas of need. Students and tutors meet in the community.

Summer Quest
A series of educational and recreational field trips, including visits to the Toronto Island, the Botanical Gardens, the Science Centre and many other locations. Participants see new places, practice their language skills, and fill their summers with activity and socialization.

Information Sessions
Age-appropriate information sessions are held throughout the year to complement children’s formal education and orient them to life in Canada. Workshops have included Fire Prevention, Cyber Safety, and Hand Washing/Hygiene.

Solution-Focused Counseling
Our child and youth counselors are available to meet one-on-one, and offer support with issues such as resolving family conflict, working through difficult feelings, finding a doctor or psychiatrist, accessing reliable information, etc. Always, the counselors’ work is informed by an understanding of the effects of trauma.

Homework Club
The high school homework club meets on Mondays, and has access to our computer lab.

One-on-One Tutoring
A free one-on-one tutoring program for youth in high school, college and university, as well as those looking to practice academic English. CCVT matches students with volunteer tutors according to availability and areas of need. Students and tutors meet in the community.

Education Counseling
Young people can receive help completing applications and planning their academic or employment futures.

Leadership Development
Youth have opportunities throughout the year to enhance their leadership capacity and gain volunteer hours. These include roundtable discussions and peer support groups for newcomer youth, workshops and outings, as well as referrals to our community partners.

Summer Quest Trips
The youth take part in summer fun with outings to explore their new city. They learn about various neighborhoods and attractions in a group setting, and make new friends along the way.

Workshops for youth include:

  • Job Interview Skills
  • Customer Service Training
  • G1 Driver’s License Skills
  • Health and Sexual Health
  • Educational Options

Parent support at CCVT includes help with:

  • Daycare subsidy applications
  • Understanding and navigating the school system
  • Social assistance applications
  • Navigating the child welfare system
  • Accessing free or affordable sports and recreational activities in the community
  • and much more

Solution-Focused Counseling
Parenting is always challenging, especially in a new country. At times, caregivers need one-on-one support. As situations arise in the caregiver-child relationship, CCVT can offer information about resources for children and parents in the community, along with support in meeting the parents’ needs.

Every summer during July and August the Main Office (Downtown) and Scarborough locations of CCVT offer FREE “Summer Quest” programming in Toronto for newcomer children and youth clients.

Summer Quest activities are FUN and educational, helping to orient clients to the city of Toronto, and provide opportunities for individual and team play through field trips and outings.

The 2019 Downtown Summer Quest will feature the following FREE activities between July 9 – August 15, 2019:
