CCVT

Youth for Truth and Reconciliation
(TRC)

The objective of this program was to enable newcomer youth to take leadership in learning about Indigenous issues with a focus on climate change. The project aimed to strengthen the relationship between newcomers, the land and Indigenous peoples. CCVT with the support of Chizuru Nobe-Ghelani has been working tirelessly to teach newcomers about the history of the land they are living on. Three newcomer youth were selected by youth counselors to work on the project. Throughout the course of nine months youth conducted research, brainstormed creative ideas to support Indigenous communities, attended rallies and delivered a final presentation to staff and volunteers and external partners. The program ran from September 2023-June 2024.

The youth also had the opportunity to interview Elder Norma Jacobs and Dr Timothy Leduc to learn first hand about Indigenous culture, knowledge and traditions. The interview left a profound impact on the youth and inspired them to further research the current issues Indigenous communities across Canada are facing.
